Hartlepool Carers, who represent hundreds of people who look after others, has launched its GP Accreditation Programme.

The organisation described it as “a significant step forward” in creating a more carer-friendly healthcare system in Hartlepool.

It aims to improve the identification and support of unpaid carers in the town and has welcomed its two first recipients.

Hart Medical Practice at West View and Seaton Surgery in Seaton Carew have both been recognised by Hartlepool Carers for demonstrating their support to local carers.

Christine Fewster, CEO of Hartlepool Carers, said:Unpaid carers play a vital role in supporting family members, friends and neighbours, often at considerable personal cost, yet many remain hidden and unaware of the help available to them. By working closely with GP practices, this programme will help ensure carers are recognised earlier, connected to appropriate support services, and acknowledged for the invaluable contribution they make every day.

To apply, GP practices are asked to fill in a form and make three pledges explaining how they are supporting carers.

Hartlepool Carers urges at least one to relate to young carers.

Successful applicants receive an e-badge and certificate to display in the practice to patients and partners.

According to national charity Carers UK, unpaid carers in the UK save the government an estimated £184 billion per year.

There are an estimated 6,000 carers in Hartlepool, with up to two thirds classed as “hidden carers” who may not even identify themselves as such.

An application form for the GP accreditation scheme can be downloaded from www.hartlepoolcarers.org.uk

We are particularly delighted to have Hart Medical Practice and Seaton Surgery on board as our first accredited practices, demonstrating their commitment to recognising and supporting carers within their patient populations.

Their involvement marks an important milestone in creating a more carer-friendly healthcare system across Hartlepool.

At Hartlepool Carers, we are proud to be leading this initiative and strengthening our partnership with primary care to improve outcomes for carers and those they care for.
