Supporting carers in their role

Raising awareness of caring in our community is really important to us. We know over 12,000 people provide unpaid care in Hartlepool and we need to ensure our community understand what this means.

In partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council we now can provide everyone with free training. We have two courses you can access including

  • Adult Carer Aware Course
  • Young Carer Aware Training

Both courses can be done in your own time and at your own pace. We encourage all businesses, schools, and community partners to take up this training to ensure we can support our community at the earliest opportunity.

We provide a range of workshops to support carers around their caring role.

We also understand many Carers are keen to take part in learning and workshops to support them in their caring role. Working with carers we host a range of sessions throughout the year.

We also work with partners to support carers into learning to help develop skills. Get in-touch with us to find out more.

Supporting your employees

Help your employees who are carers.

Hartlepool Carers are dedicated to supporting local businesses to become more carer friendly for their employees. 1 in 7 workers in the UK combine paid work with unpaid care so it’s likely that there is at least one working carer in many of the town’s businesses.

Additionally 600 people give up work every day to care for an elderly or disabled relative, so a supportive employer could make a difference for many employees.

Hartlepool Carers offer a range of services to support you in becoming a carer friendly organisation:

We can provide you with information to assist with reviewing, writing and ‘carer proofing’ current policies and practises.

We can provide training to line managers and supervisors to enable them to provide effective support for carers and implement carer friendly policies. We also offer training to all employees to raise awareness of carers and the support available.

We can support your carers network by offering information advice drop-in sessions for carers.

Your employees can register with Hartlepool Carers to access a range of support services including; benefits advice, 1:1 emotional support, social activities and our Carers Access Card.

Employee Charter

Commit to making positive changes within your organisation and sign up to our Carer Friendly Employer Charter. Employers signing up to the charter will be invited to be advertised as carer friendly and have a link on our
website.

To register to become a Carer Friendly Employer, simply complete the below registration form and email to staff@hartlepoolcarers.org.uk who will then be in touch to discuss your application further.

Carer Access and Partners

What is a Carer Access Card? Carers play a vital role in our community, and here at Hartlepool Carers we feel your role should be valued and rewarded. We are offering carers the opportunity to register for a Carer Access Card. The card is valid for three years and allows registered carers to access a host of different offers and discounts from businesses and services around the town who recognise the role of carers. These companies will be easily identified as Carer Access Card partners and we expect new businesses to join the scheme regularly.

How can Schools or Colleges help young carers?

Guidance for education settings for all ages

As part of our commitment to young carers in the town we can offer your school or college a FREE staff training session on how to identify and refer young carers into Hartlepool Young Carers service and/or an Information, Advice and Guidance session for children, parents and families within your school.

Our team members can come along to your school with a host of information, giving young carers and the community the opportunity to register with us and receive free information, advice and guidance and also provide school staff with the knowledge of when and how to refer a young carer into our service.

If you would like further information regarding our services, would like us to come and meet your team or start the conversation in how we can work together for the best of young carers in Hartlepool please do not hesitate email staff@hartlepoolcarers.org.uk.

Young Carers in Schools Award

We also provide support for schools to complete Young Carers in Schools Award. This is a free initiative that makes it as easy as possible for schools to support young carers, and awards good practice.

The Young Carers in Schools (YCiS) initiative is run jointly by Carers Trust and The Children’s Society.

By taking part in the programme, schools will be able to show they are meeting the needs of this particularly vulnerable pupil group. As many as one in 5 secondary school pupils could be a young carer.
