Know Your Rights

That’s the theme of this year’s Carers Rights Day which takes place tomorrow (26th November) .

Whether you are a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, Carers UK believe that it’s important that you understand your rights and are able to access the support that is available to you as soon as you need it. Many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support. Each year, Carers Rights Day helps us:

  • ensure carers are aware of their rights
  • let carers know where to get help and support
  • raise awareness of the needs of carers.

The theme for Carers Rights Day 2020 is ‘Know Your Rights’

In a recent survey of nearly 6,000 carers, Carers UK found:

  • Four in five unpaid carers are providing more care for relatives
  • 78% reported that the needs of the person they care for have increased during the pandemic
  • Two thirds (67%) worried about how they will cope through further lockdowns or local restrictions.

Carers need to know their rights wherever they are in their caring journey: whether they are in the workplace, in a healthcare setting, when interacting with professionals or at home. This Carers Rights Day, we, alongside Carers UK, want to empower carers with information and support, so they can feel confident asking for what they need. We also want carers to know how to challenge things when their rights are not being met.

If you are caring for someone and want to know more about your rights, click here to read Carers UK Looking after someone guide.

To celebrate Carers Rights Day and raise awareness we have put together a programme of online activities throughout the day and we encourage all carers to take part.

First up, at 11am we will have a starting with a special Talking Tuesday (yes I know it’s Thursday) with Hartlepool Borough Council, talking about support for Carers, Carers Allowance and other important carers rights. This will be available to view via our Facebook and YouTube.

At 1pm we have our Bingo and Afternoon Tea for those who have pre booked which has also been provided by our friends at the Council.

Then at 3pm we have a Moving Monday/Hub Hop Mash Up with a special Hub Hop that Hartlepool Community Hubs have put together for us. You can join us via Zoom – meeting ID 315 127 1684.

6pm is our young carer disco with the awesome DJ Gav: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84114538754
Meeting ID: 841 1453 8754

and then at 7pm we have our Family Quiz Night on our Facebook Discussion group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hpoolcarers/

It’s going to be a brilliant day, make sure you join us!
