‘A Carers Life’ July 2020 – Sarah

Hi my name is Sarah Harrison and myself and my partner adopted the most amazing little girl four years ago. Here is a picture of our lives as carers (or to us ‘mum’ and ‘dad’). Life hasn’t been easy and we have had our hard times and good times.

Over the last four years we have had learn how to parent a child that had suffered extreme neglect, abuse and emotional abuse. A little girl who had already been passed from family to family, who had everyone let her down. Who already had her own little personality and character.

Then to add into this we discovered, she has additional needs, autism attachment disorder and sensory processing disorder.

She regresses to being like a baby, crawling and having a bottle. Everyday we never know which child we have. She only sleeps five hours and we are up and sorted by 5am. She struggles with transition, and we use a strict routine to help her. She struggles with emotions and we are trying to help her work through how to work on how manage these emotions.

But, amongst all this we have the pleasure of watching her grow into the most amazing young lady.

We are exhausted beyond belief but wouldn’t have it any other way.
